What are Allergies?

If you have allergies, don't blame the pollen in the air or your best friend's cat for your symptoms. Most allergens are harmless and what really causes allergic reactions is your own immune system. Your immune system mistakes these harmless allergens as a serious threat and attacks them, creating the allergy symptoms you experience.

Allergies reflect an overreaction of the immune system to substances that typically cause no reaction in most individuals. These substances can trigger sneezing, wheezing, coughing and itchingAllergies are not only bothersome, but may be linked to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses (such as sinusitis and asthma). Your provider will take the following into consideration when diagnosing allergies:

  • Family history with allergies

  • Type and frequency of symptoms

  • Seasonality

  • Duration

  • Location of symptoms (indoors, outdoors)

WITH PROPER MANAGEMENT, TREATMENT AND PATIENT EDUCATION, allergic diseases can be controlled or cured and people with allergies can lead normal, productive, healthier and more enjoyable lives.
